Maybe it’s the continuing typhoid I seem to be carrying (day 7 of this cold. Ick), but I came across two news stories today that made me question what the hell people are thinking.
First, there’s Kate Moss.
She got married today to a rocker. That’s all well and good. She looks gorgeous, even with her turkey timers popping. No, what disappoints me is that she chose to wear a dress by John Galliano, he of the drunken, anti-Semitic rant. I saw the video. It wasn’t nice. I used to be a big fan of Galliano, but after that, I don’t know. It just seemed kinda not cool. And while Kate’s dress is very nice, it’s not THAT unusual or unique. It’s very vintage in feel, so I think she probably could have found something similar without the Jew-bashing.
Then there’s Nike.
WHAT THE HELL NIKE?? From the Huffington Post story:
Nike and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick have agreed to a new deal, four years after Nike terminated its contract with Vick due to his arrest on dogfighting charges.
“Michael acknowledges his past mistakes,” Nike spokesman Derek Kent told Rovell. “We do not condone those actions, but we support the positive changes he has made to better himself off the field.”
This one really chaps my hide. Animals are helpless. They trust us completely. They depend on us for everything. And what did he do? He took that unconditional love and trust and brutalized his animals. For sport and fun.
So yeah. No Nike in our house. I’m boycotting them. I know Nike doesn’t care if one lone little runner doesn’t buy their stuff. But for me, the only way to stick to my principles is to hold my own private boycott and put my money where my beliefs are.
What do you think? Am I being overly-sensitive? Should I just shut up? Is this topic way too heavy for this blog? Let me know! (Tomorrow, I promise to post about wine and tabloid magazines again.)
